Statement

Although I have 1000 doubts, I believe there must be a maker. Nothing else can I be sure of in this world.

Time and scrutiny exposes errors in everything. All theories and facts should be taken with a grain of salt. The only thing that is permanent is that there is an above. This is all that can last. Age and time and the world and life test this to the core. I doubt all the time. More often than not it seems as if there is not a maker. It seems an illusion for the young, a crutch for the needy, a primitive emotion for the uninformed. However, all this being said, and despite my doubts, there must be a maker. And again, nothing else is for sure.

I have come to realize....

These things I have come to realize.

That there is a presence, an above, a superior intelligence that is conscious, sympathetic and concerned despite all the evidence and experience and logic that points to the contrary.

That everything in this life cannot be taken too seriously. Philosophies are flawed, concepts are flawed, reason is flawed, and principles and ideas are found wanting. They are useful but flawed. Time passing exposes their cracks.

Learned late but nevertheless learned is that the needs of the body and mind require some playfulness and joy as part of their ingredients. To survive for any serious length of time they are a necessity. Their absence leads to rigidity, illness and more.

Finally, to come to any meaningful realizations one has to have some time for stillness, where one is not “on.” This doesn’t mean you have to do nothing, but it does mean you can’t be preoccupied all the time. If this is not done voluntarily, sometimes life has a way to force us to be still. This might be painful but in the long run, needed.

The essence

This is what I believe. There is a maker, an above, a presence, a God. Everything else, principles, proofs, theories, wisdom, science, theology, religion, humanities, common sense, the practical, tradition, the new age, the classical, the historical, the here and now, all have some validity but have to be taken with a grain of salt. None can be fully trusted. These two statements are the essence of existence.

It is not always obvious that there is a maker. Indeed with time it often becomes a faint memory, even a bitter acknowledgment given what one sees inside and outside of one’s self. The ugly aspects of existence can easily negate this recognition, but even if faint and tentative and distant, it is a thread, a memory, a hint to that something more that cannot be denied.

Principles, theories, wisdom and so on can all be useful. They can be discussed and played with, refined and tested, thought about and written about, but all are not 100% true and don’t stand the test of time. They exist in time and therefore might be true for a time, but that is all. They are meant to disappear and self-contradict and we are left with nothing but the first statement, there is a maker.

Not much can be discussed as to there being a God. Either God is or isn’t. As far as the second statement, much can be discussed because it deals with living, the millions of variables and variations of doing so. They are the principles of getting through life, observing life, learning from life, but all of these tools fall short, no matter how brilliant and useful. Still, they are worth considering and wrestling with since they are the matter of life. Their failures and successes can lay the groundwork to thoughtfully consider the truth of the first statement.

There is a God, a maker, an above, a presence. Everything else falls short. This is the essence of all existence.
